Acne & Scarring

women-Acne-Befor-and-After_richard_sibthorpe.pngIf your skin is misbehaving, don’t let it get to the point where it’s really getting you down. You just need to remember that something can be done. Regular treatments are important to helping your skin look and feel its very best. You need a daily skin routine that is tailored to your skin type and concerns. The key is using products and/or light therapy which have proven scientific validation.

Imagine the confidence you would feel if you could be free of acne. Acne is especially prevalent in teenage skin and young adults. During puberty, when testosterone levels rise the oil production in the skin can clog the pores and cause inflammation. For the most part, acne is caused by hormones and diet. Acne appears in many areas of the body, but most often on the face, back and upper chest. A delay in acne treatment can lead to permanent scarring. If you have a significant or long-standing skin problem, don’t waste time and money in trying over the counter products. It is possible to keep even the most severe cases of acne under control. A combined approach of treatments and procedures resolve most acne and help regain a smoother and clearer skin. Peels have long been used for facial rejuvenation but, most recently, they have been used for the treatment of acne. The process of peeling encourages a new layer of skin which is smoother with an improved texture. There are many different types of peels to treat specific skin conditions.

I restrict my practice to treatments which have consistently demonstrated results. Blue light therapy uses non UV light therapy to eliminate acne-causing bacteria deep within the skin. The result is clear, smooth skin with fewer blemishes, clogged pores, pimples and acne breakouts. Lustre Pure Light is a new light technology to treat spots which has been developed by leading dermatologists and tested by healthcare professionals specialising in skin conditions. This treatment has been designed for patients to use at home and is available to purchase at my practice. Dermaroller is a micro-needling procedure that stimulates the skin in order to help it regenerate and repair itself naturally. The result is brighter, smoother, healthier and younger looking skin. I have had successful results in using Dermaroller to improve the appearance of acne scarring. I recommend a course of three Dermaroller treatments scheduled a minimum of six to eight weeks apart. Of course it is important you have a healthy diet and review any hormonal issues.

Acne scarring
Acne scarring can occur at the site of an injury to tissue. In the case of acne, the injury is caused by the body’s inflammatory response to sebum, bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) and their debris. Variations in the severity of scarring can be seen from person to person. In general, the more severe the acne, the greater the tendency for scarring.

Acne scars arise when spots become inflamed and do not heal properly. There are essentially three main types of acne scars. Rolling scars are relatively broad depressions in the skin that have rounded sloping edges. Boxcar scars also have relatively broad depressions but, have steep defined edges. Ice pick scars are deep and narrow scars and resemble a large empty pore in the skin. Rolling acne scars are common, they tend to become more pronounced as the skin ages and loses its original elasticity. They are best treated with chemical peels, micro needling and/or red light therapy. Boxcar scars are more difficult to treat but usually respond to peels, micro needling and in some cases fillers. They may also require surgical subcision. Ice pick scars are the most difficult to treat and TCA (trichloracetic acid) pass is usually effective, and again surgical subcison may be required.
